What is noticeable about our ambassadors is how they grow in confidence across the year.
It is the focus of what we are trying to do: increase their awareness of opportunities, develop their sense of self worth and their ability to make change in the world through leadership. The third and final full development day of the year long programme saw us being hosted by the brilliant team at Yarm Prep. A huge thanks to them for their fantastic warm welcome and of course, some very large cookies!
We kicked off the day with David from Cats-UK who worked with the children on understanding their own, and others’, emotions through understanding fo physiology and techniques of regulation. It sparked lots of questions which we had to cut short as our next guest had travelled all the way from the Arctic.
Katie is a physicist from Middlesbrough who currently studies the Aurora Borealis from her base in Svalbard. You can find her on Spark by searching for ‘Katie’. She spoke to the children about her work and the really intersting things that can happen to her on a daily basis. I don’t think I’ve ever had an astronaut ‘pop in’ to my office!
We also had a special visit from Sonia who is currently having a break from Spark to look after her beautiful daughter Elodie….who also wanted to come! That is the real power of women isn’t it?
There was a danger that the day could have been an anticlimax in the afternoon after all of that but the children were challenged to think critically about issues that they could affect and we quickly taught them to have a first go at Clips to produce a short, structured social media post about their thoughts. It was fascinating listening to the different issues in different schools….although football was a constant source of irritation. Some images of the day below:
