Lesson starters?

The wonderful people at Cummins asked Spark to create some videos that schools could use. We know that schools and Trusts all have different planning and often full resources already created; why would anyone use something new? So we worked with Cummins to identify roles that related to a range of objectives in the National Curriculum – all planning is based on that. The result is a series of short videos that you can use to add context and enhance what you have planned already. As a pilot we would love your feedback on how we could make any in the future more useful; or not, if that is the answer.

The underlying principle is that there is overwhelming evidence that connecting the classroom to the world of work, ‘what is the point of learning this?’ has a measurable positive outcome on attitudes, achievement and even future earnings. Spark would also argue that it makes lessons more meaningful and context bound. Of course, by using these in conjunction with our ‘roles connected to what you are learning’ videos, you develop a culture of ‘our curriculum intent teaches children that everything they learn about has real world application in a real role’.
