At Thorntree Primary, their Year 3/4 classes decided to jump in to world of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and explore careers in the digital sector.

As part of their ongoing Careers Week, we jumped headfirst into the fast-paced world of the Digital Sector. Our mission? To step into the shoes of professional CAD Designers.

Working with CAD software requires a massive amount of spatial awareness and a “trial and error” mindset. We were blown away by the resilience on display by these Year 3/4 pupils. Whether it was balancing a block perfectly on top of another or navigating a 3D environment for the first time, all the pupils stayed focused and determined.

The real highlight? We didn’t let those designs stay stuck behind a glass screen. We brought our creations to life in the classroom! Seeing a digital design transition from a 3D design on their iPad to right next to them in the classroom using augmented reality was a real highlight.

“This is so sick, I didn’t know you could do things like this for a job. ” — Year 4 pupil.

(And for those of us a generation or two older, don’t worry—in the world of Year 4, “sick” is the ultimate badge of approval! It means they were absolutely blown away.)
