Presenting effectively is a skill that is developed over time. It builds confidence and develops communication skills which are probably the most mentioned skill in every role we interview. Keynote helps direct ‘formal’ presentations towards an interesting presenting style rather than ‘death by powerpoint’ and can be used as an activity for pretty any subject in the curriculum. Presenting at least once or twice a year is a great way to develop children’s confidence.
There are very few roles, especially professional roles, where the ability to present information in this way is not a highly prized skill.
This video is very much focussed on how teachers can use the tools in Keynote to scaffold work for pupils across any subject.
How often have pupils used whiteboards in your class, for quick calculations, planning, showing working etc? Keynote allows a child to have multiple boards, allows ideas to be copied from board to board, can be saved if needed and best of all, doesn’t get ink all over their hands and shirts! Also look at Numbers for an ‘infinite’ whiteboard if you prefer.
This video showcases how use of layers can increase complexity of a piece of work, not ‘just to be clever’ but to engage an audience more effectively. You can use the technique in any subject where you want to produce an image rich document that looks professional.
This technique is REALLY powerful for capturing evidence of learning, especially if it is to be shared at a later date, often with parents. With just one device in the teacher’s hands, evidence can be quickly collected to reflect learning across the class. Where children have their own devices, this can become even more personalised and incredibly powerful for learning. Sharing a child’s bespoke learning book including evidence of work and their own reflections on it from across a year is a brilliant way to show parents what progress has been made.
The simplest use of text and images. Children can write about a picture provided or draw their own (externally and take a photo). It adds a level of ‘professionalism’ to their work that pencil and paper can’t and prepares them for using layouts as they progress later in school. It can be applied to pretty much any subject.
Labels are useful to direct attention to a task, create a task or prompt further attention. This example is from a geography lesson but can be applied to any lesson where you want the children to mix text and images. Scaffolding a task with labels which then can be expanded with more information is also a great way to plan out longer pieces of writing.
This general video shows a range of different ways in which Pages can help engage and focus pupils in different subjects.
Templates allow children to focus on the content instead of the format whilst also getting experience of a what an effective layout can look like. This example is for a History lesson but could equally be applied to any subject where information is to be shared with an audience: advert for a new product, flyer for the school fair, newsletter about topic work etc. The focus is on audience engagement and Apple have done the design but for you. Children with more experience of using Pages may want to begin customising the designs, particularly in terms of colour and font choice.
