This general video shows a range of different ways in which Pages can help engage and focus pupils in different subjects.
Templates allow children to focus on the content instead of the format whilst also getting experience of a what an effective layout can look like. This example is for a History lesson but could equally be applied to any subject where information is to be shared with an audience: advert for a new product, flyer for the school fair, newsletter about topic work etc. The focus is on audience engagement and Apple have done the design but for you. Children with more experience of using Pages may want to begin customising the designs, particularly in terms of colour and font choice.
An ebook is an effective way to curate and scaffold information from a topic so that children can access resources (text/images/video etc) and even be directed to tasks by the structure that you create. It allows pupils to work at their own pace (with occasional nudges I am sure!) allowing teachers more opportunity to target support. You can even leave space for the children to show to show evidence of their work. It is no more complicated than what teachers typically do preparing a Smart Notebook or Powerpoint for a topic.
Learning about money is often cited in ‘teacher polls’ focussed on ‘what should the curriculum include?’ There are lots of fantastic resources out there and we have included links below if you would like to explore.
Spark’s Money Matters has a very clear focus – the cost of living.
Each section reflects the sort of monthly bills that a typical household can expect. The lessons all begin with a video introduction and include activities for children to personalise the outcomes to their own thoughts. A spreadsheet can be used to link the activities if required based on a notional ‘£36000’ a year earnings from a job (slightly above average national wage). How much they think they want to spend can then be used in conjunction with the other aspirations resources on this site to explore ‘well what job do you need if you want a Lamborghini!?’ The ‘lessons’ can be done as a stand alone, week by week or even back to back across longer sessions. Spark can also come and lead the activities as a ‘day’ in school.
Some teachers may just want to use the videos as discussion starting points and not use the follow up activities – they fit beautifully into personal development sessions or even assemblies.
One word of warning though: Children are VERY engaged by these resources so don’t be surprised when they want to do lots of work around it – it MEANS A LOT to them
