At Thorntree Academy, when Careers Week arrives, it’s not just any ordinary week—it’s a whirlwind of exploration, innovation, and hands-on experiences that leave both pupils and teachers buzzing with excitement. So far, as part of Careers Week, we have worked with Year 2 and Year 5 children delivering construction workshops to hydrogen-powered car races, the day was filled with activities designed to inspire and challenge children to think about the vast array of possibilities that await them in the world of work.
The morning kicked off with Year 2 pupils donning hi-vis jackets and hard hats as they delved into the world of construction. Armed with spanners, nuts, and bolts, these young builders set out to create their own free-standing structures. From simple towers to elaborate bridges, their imaginations ran wild as they learned about the importance of communication, collaboration and problem-solving. As they tightened bolts and connected pieces, they not only built physical structures but also laid the foundation for future careers in engineering and construction.
Meanwhile, in the afternoon, it was the Year 5 pupils’ turn to explore the realms of science and engineering. Focusing on hydrogen as the fuel of the future, they embarked on a thrilling adventure into the world of alternative energy. The highlight of the day was the Hydrogen Grand Prix, where students raced hydrogen-powered cars. With hearts pounding and adrenaline coursing through their veins, they cheered as they zoomed across the hall, propelled by the power of hydrogen. Through this hands-on experience, the children gained a deeper understanding of renewable energy sources and the vital role they play in shaping our future.
