Find out how to get their job!

In Summary:

Meet Emma! She has a very important job in a hospital in the UK. She is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, which means she is a highly trained expert who helps people when they are hurt or sick.

Here is what her job is like:

• Where she works: Emma works in two main places: A&E (which stands for Accident and Emergency) and Urgent Care.

• What she does: When someone comes into the hospital, Emma looks at them to figure out what is wrong (this is called diagnosing). She decides if they need medicine or a bandage, and then she helps them get better so they can either go home or stay in the hospital for more help.

• Who she helps: She helps all sorts of people! Some might have broken bones, a very bad cough (the flu), or a really sore throat (tonsillitis). She also helps people who are very, very sick and need help with their breathing or their heart.

• Being a medical detective: Emma has to be really good at talking to people to find out what happened to them. Sometimes, if a patient is too sick to talk, she has to use her own smart thinking to figure out how to help them.

• Working together: She doesn’t work alone! She has a great team around her, and she talks to special doctors called consultants if she needs extra help.

How did she get this job? First, Emma studied Biology in school (her A-levels) to learn how the human body works. Then, she went to university for three years to learn how to be a nurse. Her first job was actually working as a nurse in a prison before she started working in the hospital.

The best part of her job: Emma loves seeing people go home happy because she helped them feel better. Even when people are very poorly, their families are often very thankful to have someone as kind and helpful as Emma looking after them.
